Title: General Forum Interest Check
Post by: Talz on January 26, 2011, 01:37:25 pm
So I'm thinking maybe we can bounce some ideas around here to get an idea what everyone's in the mood for. What kind of genre interest you, do you have an idea you've been wanting to turn into a RP, a craving to RP something in particular? If we figure out what everyone's into, maybe we can get our first group RP or two up.

I myself have a penchant for anything sci-fi or fantasy, with an increasing interest in horror. More and more however, I'm interested in the idea of intermixing genre. For example, I find sci-fi/horror can often be interesting.

As for RP's I myself am working on, I've been brainstorming ideas for a full scale Pokémon journey RP. I still need to figure out exactly how to implement the battle system though. I've also got an old Resident Evil RP I was supposed to put up ages ago. It's quite in-depth though, and is intended to be broken up into numerous parts. The main problem facing this RP is that it needs a lot of people to start, and a lot of pre-planning between players. Still though, I was going to write a short story about my characters private investigations into the cannibal killer murders that predate the RP itself. I was thinking that this investigation could itself be the theme of a prequel RP. For a time, I was also thinking about a Jurassic Park RP, but I never did anything on this.

Anyway, does anyone else have any ideas, interests, etc?

Realistic warfare, Medieval Fantasy, Modern. I can do most things.

But, currently I'm pretty tapped out on time, so finding time to RP is limited, I'll keep an eye out if anything strikes me though.

You say sci-fi/horror and my mind screams "Vashta Nerada".

I had wondered why you stopped asking me to make those pictures for you.

Anyways, I'm good for anything, really... I'm not terribly picky on Genre, though. And as some of you are probably aware I'm no stranger to mixing genre, my thread Kamera: Twisted Fates was literally a mix of Modern, Sci-fi, and Fantasy. Though admittedly it did lean heaviest on Fantasy.

The kinds of RPs I will not do is a much easier list to make:
- Real life RPs (I can do that every day...)
- School-based RPs (Why would you want to go back?)
- Closed-Plan RPs (What I mean by this is when someone makes pre-set roles for people to fill in. I dislike that.)

As far as other possible RPs go, I was recently playing Fable III and had an idea.
There is a quest in Fable III called "The game". In "The Game" you encounter a group of magi who are playing a tabletop game and ask if you are willing to 'play' the hero. When you agree you are literally shrunken down and placed on the table and have to fight your way through their game-session.
The commentary makes it amusing since it's entirely a spoof of a normal Dungeons and Dragons play session.
Anyways, my point is that I thought that this could potentially be a fun RP to do. But we would require a DM willing to literally act like a DM.

Also- Talz, while I admit that your battle system does seem interesting, I'm worried about over-complicating any RPs with it. Part of what makes some RPs flow is the fact that they are devoid of math and calculation, and run based off of players trust in one another that they will act in realistic and reasonable ways. The other challenge being that you can't write out a long post about fighting several enemies, because each attack has to be checked to see if it hit and no one will know the results until you reply. Which- if my previous experiences with forum RPs is any indication... could take a very, very long time.

I guess I wasn't feeling that motivated to do it anymore. That, and I didn't want to bug you with it.

As always, your idea sounds interesting. I'd definitely be willing to give it a shot.

Regarding the battle system, you're definitely right. I guess what I'm trying to do is find a way to make it simple and fast, yet still do the job of making players think somewhat strategically.

Hmm... it's a shame that the forum doesn't have a built in "roll" system like some games do... that's a great way to have a combat system in RP without bogging it down. Simply have two parties roll against one another- and roll versus difficulty checks for things like evading danger, enduring pain, or resisting spells.

As for my forum... I suppose I could make another rendition of it here.
Might be nice to have a fresh group of people tackle it without having to split my interest even further.
If you want me to Talz, I'll set up a variant of Kamera here on your forum for people to take a look at... though before I do I want the go-ahead from you. If I do this I need to modify a few things such as plot-lines... and I don't want to spend time doing it if we're not going to wind up using it.

I can do most anything really, I do prefer the whole fantasy idea though.

The problem with the roll system is that I think we'd have to install a mod for that, which isn't possible right now. The reason being free hosts don't allow you to install mods for security reasons. If this place ever takes off I'll be moving us to our own host, and then we can do whatever we want. It's hard to warrant that right now though, because we're so small. I could be missing something though, and so I'm going to look into that.

I'd be thrilled if you put Kamera up. I know I'd certainly join!

*laughs* Fair enough, I'll work on getting my OOC up in a little while... if you're lucky by the end of the day.
Any specific place I should put it? I haven't looked at the thread sections to see if this is set up exactly like RPGuild or if it's a little different.

It's pretty similar, although the requirements are generally a lot steeper, especially for advanced. I'm hoping to achieve a greater emphasis on actually putting effort into your posts rather then spam everywhere with this site.

I'll leave it up to you, but it might help to read the descriptions lil' Bunnay put up.

FOUR paragraphs per post?
I'm sorry but that simply is not possible. Nobody can guarantee 4 paragraphs in EVERY post.

Especially in cases of dialogue or combat when you require a response from another person... you'll never have an RP where EVERY post has 4 paragraphs.

Do tell.

Vashta Nerada are piranhas of the air. Their name translated to English means "The shadows that melt the flesh". They're the reason that every sentient species is paranoid of dangerous things hiding in the dark. Usually, there are only 300 or so scattered across a planet, living in forests and feeding off roadkill, but there have been a few cases where vast swarms were found concentrated in small places. Swarms of them hide in the shadows because in the light that's what you see of them. A shadow on the ground. When someone touches a shadow containing a swarm of Vashta Nerada, or even lets their shadow touch on, the swarm changes over to that person making it look like they have more than one shadow.

Don't worry about any of that for now, it's all gotta be tampered with. I'm not concerned much with length, more about quality. I didn't actually know it specified four paragraphs.

Sinister indeed. I'm keeping the finer details to myself in case a RP involving them gets started.

Of course that is at the discretion of the GM, in every case I've ever seen. Most won't make a big deal out of it unless your posts are lazy. But I know for a fact that in many places when there are post limits and you have conversation that the simplest thing to do is collaborate.

Conversations flow much better if they are combined into one post between the characters. (for example, use PMs, and write each character's part taking turns as you would if you were posting, but once you get ample length or through your part, it gets posted). It makes the thread far less choppy and tends to have less errors in continuity.

As far as 4 paragraphs per post. I average 10-12, so... it's not that hard. Don't just say "He did this." Details build interest and the world.

"Paragraph" is a pretty vague term though, isn't it? Like, paragraphs can be so varied...

When I think of a paragraph, I think of a really big, full paragraph like that you'd see in most novels. Four might be a lot for a bare minimum number, especially when we're more concerned with quality. A lot of advanced level posts I see on other sites tend to be around the two-four paragraph mark, although it isn't too uncommon to see higher numbers. Maybe a ball park number would be better?

*shrugs* I don't know... I mean if you look at when I ran Kamera, I had roughly 4 FULL paragraphs in a post, but that was because I was running about 4 separate plot lines in the same world.

But- since you say not to worry about it, I'll just talk to you about which area you think my thread should go in once I finish editing it.
Unfortunately I have to tell you it won't be for a few days. I'm in the middle of a major project right now and need to make 4 more models, and texture all 10. Hopefully I'll be able to knock a bunch out today in class, but... one never knows.

Title: Re: General Forum Interest Check
Post by: Talz on January 29, 2011, 12:20:58 pm
Well, I suppose where you put it is largely up to you. If you want people to really put a lot of effort into their posts and characters, that's probably more likely in advanced I'd guess. But then again, if you want as many people as you can get, newer members might be more likely to join in if it's in beginners or intermediate.

Good luck with you projects, I got a few of those to deal with coming up too.

@_@ I forgot how much work goes into setting a thread like this up... 6 whole pages and I'm maybe 20% done...

Sorry for keeping you waiting Talz, but it's still FAR from finished and I am much to tired to work on it any more tonight... blame my Texturing and Lighting project.

Luckily I should have tomorrow free to work on it- we're getting snowed out of school. Of course- that means I have to work on my project even more now that I won't have class and such...

XD You don't know me very well if you expect me working on a campaign setting to be stress-free.
I nit-pick... either way- I just finished that milestone for my class so I'll be able to start working more on the Thread. Should be just a few days, provided something else doesn't get dumped in my lap.

I sincerely tried to read this whole topic. But It's 0239 in the morning and I feel like I'm going to faint........ I tend to average 3 - 6 paragraphs in a single post. So I think four isn't that unreasonable. So long as you give GM's the right to exercise disgression. I also presonally refuse to participate in sci-fi/horror themed roleplays. I've seen to many go south. Sorry.

I will, however, participate in virtually anything else. Like many others I simply will not roleplay slice-of-life/school-life. Anything that centres on vampires (if they appear because a player wants a vampire character that is okay with me), or any other popular supernatural creature. I personally love and am completely obsessed with fantasy. All kinds of fantasy. High and low, light and dark, and anything inbetween/a combination of these. Although, as I think I may have mentioned, other than those that I said I wouldn't I'd be willing to to roleplay in anything else. Forms of sci-fi, modern, and pre-modern (anything that pre-dates modern times. This could be fantasy, or historical fiction, or anything inbetween). Supernatural, fantastical, mundaine, anything.
And with an encyclopedic knowedge of mythical/supernatural/fictional/sciency creatures I could help anybody to populate a con-world or nineteen.

I'll read through everything else later. For now it's 0249 and I've got to get some sleep lest I slip into a coma.

Edit: There. I just read through all the posts. If anyone cares I'd be personally interested in participating in this Kamera roleplay you've mentioned. It sounds rather interesting.
Oh! Talz. That PM I sent you is literally the bare bones of the whole thing. All it really serves to do is to get the basics across. When I get some time I'll put a lot more work into it.

Why bother with a length limit anyway? Leave it at advanced, casual and beginner with much vaguer requirements to do with post quality, as opposed to length. That way you can leave it up to whoever is runnign the game to manage their own rps without having arbitrary limits that allow people to get away with terrible roleplaying, simply because it meets the required length and grammatical standards.

Just putting my opinion out there.

Gah! I'm sorry- I promise- I've been working on it when I can... but school has been kicking my ass.
I hope that you're all still here and stuff- haven't checked how old this thread is by now...
Talz if you have like... and AIM or something- you could message me on mine (just PM me) that way I can keep you appraised on how things are progressing much easier. Unfortunately I still have another whole week before finals are through so I don't know how much work I'll get done on Kamera.
Hopefully I'll be able to get it up over break.

I don't want you to feel pressured about it. Things will happen when they happen.

Unfortunately, I don't have AIM. :3 But if you have MSN, or just want to email me any updates, R.Harrison@msn.com should do the trick.

Getting close... and yes, I am very, very busy. Work and school does that to you. Doesn't help that each time I think I'm just about done I keep thinking of things to add in. Hell- at the moment I'm considering adding a whole second continent and series of species that inhabit it... which... pretty much doubles the amount of work I have left to do.
But- I'll try to get it done soonish... maybe just update it after I start it or something. I don't know. Either way- I hope your forum is still active... looking at the dates of most of the posts, however, that seems unlikely.
